Situated about 50 miles west of Innsbruck, Aktiv Camping Prutz is a friendly, well positioned campsite adjacent to River Inn, 5 minutes walk from the small town of Prutz, with access to several ski areas along the Reschenpass valley.

The campsite is run by Markus Fedler and his family to a very good standard with modern shower, toilet, washing facilities and an excellent drying room with ski, boot and clothes storage areas. There is a competitively priced restaurant which opens Thursday to Sunday in winter, and a small shop in the reception area for basics. A breakfast service is available by reservation. The majority of the 120 pitches are taken up with seasonaires, many of whom only appear at weekends, but a number of touring pitches are usually available if booked in advance. For last minute spaces for less than 7 days, it is best to phone ahead, but when the office is closed available pitches with number of days possible are posted on the office door.

How to get to Aktiv Camping Prutz

There are three options for your journey to Aktiv Camping Prutz:

  1. The shortest from Calais at 630 miles is via Luxembourg on the E25, the A13 & A8 in Germany to the A7 and south over the Fernpass (nearest LPG) on the 179. The campsite is situated on the 180 Reschenpass Valley Road about 10 miles from Landeck and is easy access without need for vignette or Gobox by following 179, 184 to Imst, then Landeck and 180 into the valley. On the outskirts of Prutz you will see a Spar supermarket on your left after which there is a set of traffic lights. Turn right at these lights over a wooden river bridge and follow the road round to the right to the campsite.
  2. Alternatively, at around 700 miles if the Fernpass is closed carry on the A8 to Munich and onto the A93 to the border at Kufstein. From there follow the E45/A12 to the Brenner Pass (some toll free sections again in 2020/21). You can keep an eye on all mountain pass closures using Via Michelin here.
  3. For caravans: The better route will be to miss out Luxembourg and head for Koln, Wurzburg, and the A3 until Wurzburg where the A7 will take you south to the Fernpass. Alternatively stay on the A3 and then A9 past Nuremberg to Munich, which will miss out some long tortuous hills. From Munich follow A99/A8 to Kufstein and then as above. Mileage on this route are around  675 & 730 miles respectively.

Reschenpass Valley Ski Areas – What’s the skiing like from Prutz?

In the Reschenpass valley there are several ski areas & an ever increasing number of ski passes with which to access them.

(All distances in brackets are from the campsite).

Venet (15 kms)

Small resort accessed by gondola in Zams. Only a handful of runs, but fantastic long reds and blues which are almost deserted during off peak times. Stunning scenery.

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis (10 kms)

A good resort with 210 kms of piste rising to 2850m. Good quality on piste restaurants and well looked after snow cover. Excellent customer focus, but can be saturated with skiers at February peak times. Much quieter January & March.

Fendels – Kaunertal Glacier (5kms & 30kms)

Fendels is a very small ski area with a blue, two reds, a black run, and two on piste restaurants. There is an excellent learners area which is locally well regarded for lessons. The ski pass covers the glacier about 40 minutes away which has challenging reds & blacks from 3150m. Worth the effort on a sunny day as the views are stunning and the runs just a bit on the scary side.

Nauders (30kms)

With over 100 kms of piste rising up to 2850m this is a great resort with a range of pistes to suit all abilities. It has a well regarded ski school and some very reasonably priced on piste restaurants. Available on a linked ticket with Nauders is:

Belpiano-St Valentino

Situated just over the Italian border about 10km from Nauders, this is a beautiful area close to Lac de Reisia lift linked to Graum & Reisia and worth and day or two just to enjoy the long cruising reds, a couple of wicked blacks and some stunning scenery. A little further on into Italy is Wattles, a tiny resort on the same ski pass.

Winterised Tips

  • For an excellent pre ski breakfast try Backerei Kokle at 16 Dorfstrasse in Prutz, just 5 minutes stroll from the campsite.
  • For motorhomers and probably caravanners too, the Reschenpass is best split between Aktiv Camping and Alpen or Thoni Camping as almost all resorts will then be accessible by skibus included in the respective skipass. Google time definitely needed to unscramble skipass options.
  • Don’t leave without trying Tiroler Grostl. Everything the restaurant couldn’t sell yesterday chopped up in a frying pan and topped off with a couple of fried eggs… delicious!
  • For the over 60s check out the different senior pass prices as different ages qualify in each resort

Pros

  • Very easy access site
  • Competitively priced in low season
  • Good facilities onsite
  • Free ski bus to local resorts. A regular free ski bus runs via the site to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and also to nearby Fendels and the Kaunertal Glacier

Cons

  • Transport needed to access full range of resorts and ski options
  • Prutz is very quiet if you’re looking for apres
  • 180 valley road extremely busy at weekends
  • Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis can be packed at peak times

Nearby campsites

  • Camping Drielanderecke , Reid im Obertirol (10kms)
  • Alpen Camping Nauders (35 kms)
  • Camping Thoni , St Valentino (45kms)
