Situated just 45 miles from Salzburg, Camping Kastenhof is an attractive, high quality campsite at the centre of the Ski Amade ski region with over 760 kms of piste available. The campsite is on the edge of St Johann im Pongau alongside the Salzach river and is an easy 10 minute stroll to the centre of town with lots of shops and restaurants. Camping Kastenhof also has apartments a B&B, so is ideal for larger groups who need alternatives to camping or expect visitors during their stay. The Weissacher family who own the campsite are keen dog lovers as they provide a good exercise area, a dedicated walk alongside the river and do not charge to have dogs on site!

How to get to Camping Kastenhof

There are two options for your journey to  Camping Kastenhof. The most direct from Calais at 700 miles is via Luxembourg on the E25, the A13 & A8 in Germany to Munich, then 99 and A8 again to the Austrian border just south of Salzburg. Follow A1 and A10 (toll, vignette or GoBox required) until junction 47 for Ellmauthal, where you take the 311 to St Johann im Pongau. As you pass by St Johann with the river on your left you will see the OAMTC building to your left, leave the 311 here and cross the 311 and the river onto Alpendorfstrasse. After 1 mile turn left into Liechtensteinklammstraße for 100m and then left into Kastenhofweg. The campsite is 100m on your left. Access is level and should present no difficulties in all but the harshest weather conditions.

For caravans: The better route will be to miss out Luxembourg and head for Koln, Wurzburg, and the A3 then A9 past Nuremberg to Munich, which will miss out some long tortuous hills on the A8 south of Stuttgart. From Munich follow A99/A8 and then as above. Mileage on this route is around 730 miles.

For a toll free option: Leave the A8 at the Austrian border and take the A1 north until the Salzburg West junction (297) and turn south until you join the 150, then the 159 and follow this to the 311. This only adds about 10 miles to you journey, but does include built up residential areas to the south of Salzburg and will add about 30 minutes in travel time.

Snow Space Salzburg/Ski Amade – What is the skiing like in St Johann im Pongau?

The local ski area in St Johann im Pongau is Snow Space Salzburg which covers Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann. From the  2020/2021 season a new lift link from Flachau to Flachauwinkl/Zauchensee increases the area to 210kms of piste which are ideal for learner and intermediate skiers. Expert skiers will want to try the World Cup runs at Flachau and Zauchensee. There are also two highly regarded freestyle parks at the Absolut Park in Flachauwinkl or the Snowpark in Alpendorf. Snow Space is part of the wider Salzburger Sportwelt, one of the five regions of the Ski Amade, which offers 760 kms of piste stretching from Schladming in the east to Maria Alm in the west. For caravanners and those with access to a car, the wider valley maximises the potential of the area when using Camping Kastenhof as a base. For those committed to ski buses, the network is to a good standard and frequent at peak times.
