Camping Franzlhof is a good quality medium size campsite set adjacent to woodland on the outskirts of the popular SkiWelt town of Soll – approximately 1 hour west of Innsbruck in Austria. It is about 10 minutes walk from the town centre, which has a good range of shops, cafes and restaurants. It has well maintained modern facilities, including piped utilities on your pitch and the option to hire a private bathroom.

There is a friendly pub/restaurant on site which is open from breakfast each day and offers half and full board packages. A regular free ski bus operates from the campsite to the Soll bergbahn on the opposite side of the town, with a direct link to the SkiWelt domain (290kms)

How to get to Franzlhof Camping

There are two options for your journey to Franzlhof Camping. The most direct from Calais at 650 miles is via Luxembourg on the E25, the A13 & A8 in Germany to Munich and onto the A93 to the border at Kufstein. From there follow the E45/A12 to Worgl (some toll free sections again in 2021/22), and then the 178 to Soll. Leave the 178 at the exit for Soll town and turn left over the 178 into Dorf, which becomes Dorfbichl after about 500m. Follow Dorfbichl until it splits by Hotel Feichter and keep left for a further 350m when the campsite will appear on your left. Access through the town is good and the campsite itself should not present any difficulties, except in heavy lying snow when Dorfbichl can be tricky as it is on a slight incline and snow chains may be required.

For caravans: The better route will be to miss out Luxembourg and head for Koln, Wurzburg, and the A3 then A9 past Nuremberg to Munich, which will miss out some long tortuous hills. From Munich follow A99/A8 to Kufstein and then as above. Mileage on this route is around 670 miles.

SkiWelt – What is the skiing like in Soll?

The ski area across the SkiWelt consists of 290 kms of predominantly red and blue pistes with some demanding expert runs both on and off piste in the Hohe Salve area. The terrain ranges from 620m to 1920m and can suffer from lack of snow at some points late in the season. If you can catch the Skiwelt out of school holidays and when good snow levels prevail, the skiing here is excellent, but attempt a warming south facing slope in the school holidays you may find the skiing is little more than a survival course if a beginner!

Locally there are about 30kms of piste with some good nursery slopes used by local ski schools. Starting from the bergbahn area there are also some well set out langlauf tracks which are more suited to intermediate skiers. Soll also benefits from night skiing and a high level of snow making facilities.

Soll is also a good location for advanced skiers with some of the best off piste and long steep red and black runs in the SkiWelt being available from the Hohe Salve area.

Winterised Tips

  • Very friendly vet in nearby Westendorf (10 miles)
  • Try out the floodlit toboggan run from the top of the Soll gondola
  • If you are visiting in the peak season, advance booking is essential, especially for the restaurant on site
  • It is mandatory to have winter tyres on your vehicle in Austria between Oct & March. For more information on winter tyres, regulations and the law see our articles at Winterised.com and Winterised on tyres for caravans

Pros

  • Non camping accomodation available for friends and relatives
  • Great winter walking from the campsite

Cons

  • Pitch surfaces can get very wet in late season
  • Soll is heavily packaged by UK and EU operators and can get very busy in the school holidays
