Located about 250 miles from Milan but just 100 miles south of Innsbruck, Camping Olympia in Cortina d’Ampezzo is a large, well established site 2.5 miles north of Cortina d’Ampezzo and its ski area with 120kms of piste. The monster 1200km Dolomiti Superski area is linked to Cortina. The campsite is situated in a very attractive woodland setting alongside a river, with 200 static pitches and 60 touring pitches, which are available throughout the winter for motorhome and caravan skiers from late November. It has a seasonal restaurant, mini market, and take away service on site. A free ski bus runs from a stop close to the campsite entrance and links to the 3 main ski areas in the town. An excellent cross country ski area is a few minutes walk from the entrance and there is also a woodland path through the trees to town if you fancy an evening stroll.

How to get to International Camping Olympia

There are three options for your journey to Camping Olympia:

  1. The shortest from Calais at 735 miles is via Luxembourg on the E25, the A13 & A8 in Germany to the A7 and south over the Fernpass (179) for the A12 and the Brenner Pass. From there it is a straightforward run using the A22, SS49 & SS51. Shortly after passing through Fiames you will see parking areas for the national park and after a further 500m the campsite access road on your right. It is easy to miss but there are two or three retail outlets within 1km on the SS51 which have entrances wide enough to turn round with a large motorhome or caravan. The final 15 miles on SS51 from Dobbiaco is a steady climb through several hairpins, but the route and final access should not present difficulty in all but the heaviest snow.
  2. Alternatively, at around 790 miles if the Fernpass is closed, carry on the A8 to Munich and onto the A93 to the border at Kufstein. From there follow the E45/A12 to the Brenner Pass (some toll free sections again in 2020/21).
  3. For caravans: The better route will be to miss out Luxembourg and head for Koln, Wurzburg, and the A3 until Wurzburg where the A7 will take you south to the Fernpass, which will miss out some long tortuous hills on the A8. Alternatively stay on the A3 and then A9 past Nuremberg to Munich. From Munich follow A99/A8 to Kufstein and then as above. Mileage on this route are around 790 & 825 miles respectively.

Cortina/Dolomiti Superski Area – What is the skiing like in Cortina d’Ampezzo?

With 120kms of piste in the local area, stretching from 1220m to 2900m and a lot of snow making facilities available, Cortina offers a long season (Nov-May) and can offer some of the best on piste skiing in the Dolomites. It does however link to the huge Dolomiti Superski area (separate skipass required) via the Armentarola trail from the Falzerago-Lagazuoi cable car. The Dolomiti Superski area is spread across 12 valleys and has a total of 450 lifts with over 1200km of pistes on the one lift pass.

Locally there are three main ski areas each accessed from ski lifts in different parts of the town. Tofana has some beautiful tree lined runs with long blues and reds from the summit and a good beginners area. Faloria has north facing pistes and the best slopes for advanced skiers. Falzarego/Cinque Torri areas have a great variety to suit all abilities and will be lift linked for the 2021/2022 season.

Cortina is arguably one of the best resorts for cross-country skiers in the Alps, with around 70km of trails, most of which are found up the valley at the Fiames Nordic ski centre, which is only 700m from the campsite. This is also the start of the 30km route along the old Dolomite Railway to Dobbiaco, considered to be one of the most beautiful cross-country ski routes in the Dolomites.

Terrible, mean hearted management that detests children.

The manager yelled at my daughters. Avoid.
