Camping Reiterhof is a well equipped site offering 130 pitches, approximately 1 hour west of Innsbruck in Austria. The campsite has a modern facilities block, a morning bread service and a free ski bus to the Hopfgarten gondola just over 1km away which links to the 290kms SkiWelt area. It is a little isolated, although it has good bus access (or a 20min walk) to Hopfgarten where there are shops and restaurants. Opposite the main gate is a small guesthouse which also houses the site bar and restaurant. The shower, toilet and facilities area is constructed to a very high standard and is well maintained and regularly cleaned. Pitch sizes are reasonable with space for an awning although steel pegs will be required. For cross country ski enthusiasts there is a 13km trail which can be accessed by a short walk through woodland opposite the site entrance.

How to get to Reiterhof Camping

There are two options for your journey to Reiterhof Camping. The most direct from Calais at 655 miles is via Luxembourg on the E25, the A13 & A8 in Germany to Munich and onto the A93 to the border at Kufstein. From there follow the E45/A12 to Worgl (some toll free sections again in 2021/22), and then the 178 & 170 to Hopfgarten. As you approach the exit for the ski lift in Hopfgarten the 170 follows a sharp S bend under a railway bridge. As you pass under the bridge leave the 170 by keeping straight ahead onto Kelchsauer Landesstraße which you follow for 2kms until the campsite entrance appears on your left. Access from the 170 is a slight incline and the campsite itself should not present any difficulties in poor weather.

For caravans: The better route will be to miss out Luxembourg and head for Koln, Wurzburg, and the A3 then A9 past Nuremberg to Munich, which will miss out some long tortuous hills. From Munich follow A99/A8 to Kufstein and then as above. Mileage on this route is around 675 miles.

SkiWelt – What is the skiing like in Hopfgarten?

The ski area across the SkiWelt consists of 290 kms of predominantly red and blue pistes with some demanding expert runs both on and off piste in the Hohe Salve area. The terrain ranges from 620m to 1920m and can suffer from lack of snow at some points late in the season. If you can catch the Skiwelt out of school holidays and when good snow levels prevail, the skiing here is excellent, but attempt a warming south facing slope in the school holidays you may find the skiing is little more than a survival course if a beginner!

The local area to Hopfgarten is best suited for intermediates as the return runs are lovely long reds through trees, but they can get busy in peak season. A return via the gondola is always an option if you have overdone it on the Hohe Salve! Once at the top of the gondola, there are a number of excellent blue runs, good nursery slopes, and further access to the rest of the Ski Welt.

The car park at the Hopfgarten gondola is huge, partly undercover, very well marshalled and free of charge. There is a dedicated area for larger vehicles and motorhomes although overnight parking is not allowed.
